Languages
The Kids' Computer Club offers a wide variety of languages: Dutch, English, German, Spanish, but also French as a second language, Russian, and Chinese.
Two complementary programs are available. The first is an after-school program of a weekly hour-and-a-half class (7 years-old and up), the second is an immersion day camp of 15 to 30 hours a week during school vacations.
Classes
The proficiency of any student is evaluated before being placed in the appropriate group according to age and level. The language skill to reach by the end of the year (such as vocabulary, structure, culture...) is determined in a way to allow students to use their newly acquired knowledge and insure their progression from year to year.
Day Camps
Immersion programs can be either an initiation for beginners who wish to discover a new language, or a reinforcement of skills acquired during a previous camp or during the after-school program. The immersion aspect of it is crucial, it creates favorable conditions allowing the student to progress dramatically.
Teaching languages to little ones…
What is more fun than learning a foreign language through a variety of fun activities ? Our first objective is to associate the fun of games and arts and crafts with the discovery of new sounds and new words. The goal is to learn and have fun. Through repetition, the child soaks up vocabulary and structures. In such a workshop, we do not expect the child to know the subject like in a classic lesson, but to recognize new concepts as they present themselves to him. He only needs to learn to react appropriately. It is much more fun to learn clothes and body parts by making a puppet than by reading a long list of words ; to discover cuisines and food by cooking and then tasting. Arts and crafts allow children to manipulate material by following instructions from the teacher, who comes by each student and checks up on the progress and makes sure the new vocabulary is sinking in. Cooking also allows a lot of learning as they follow the recipe. The intensive use of the language, the systematic repetition, and the guided manipulation allow for a comfortable and supple learning.
…for teenagers,…
Stimulate and answer teenagers’ expectations is the challenge the Kids’ Computer Club takes on. Just like for younger children, the goal is still to learn enjoyably, but the material has been adapted according to their age, and to their different uses of communication, especially the internet. The priority is expression with a written support depending on need and demand. Immersion and mis en scene have been devised to create an environment where they bloom in the foreign language and where they understand that it is above all a means of communication. Role playing is one of the major tools used to achieve this. According to the teacher and the student, they will use songs and lyrics, movies in their original version, the news, they will talk and debate about these to enrich the vocabulary. We need to think outside the box and leave the school canvas behind. We need to encourage diversity to deepen knowledge, and widen the practicing field in order to transform the learning of a language into something alive.
…and for adults
Group or individual classes can be arranged for those who wish to reach new heights in their career or to learn the language of their next vacation destination.
Immersion workshops
In the past years, we have organized classes and day camps centered around a specific activity in a specific language, allowing the student to be immersed in his hobby in a chosen language, which will enhance his motivation : Spanish through animation, English through art and culture, French through photography, cooking, sports or crafts in Dutch, English and French…
